The Gym: The New Social Hub for Gen Z
New research from Focaldata, commissioned by The Gym Group, shows that more Gen Zers are choosing the gym over the pub for socialising.
How will this influence the future of gym design?
1. Dedicated Social Zones
Gyms will incorporate dedicated areas for socialising. Comfortable lounge spaces, wellness cafés, and even co-working zones will allow members to gather before and after workouts. These areas will be designed with community-building in mind, creating inviting environments that encourage conversations and connections.
2. Combining Fitness and Leisure
The traditional divide between fitness zones and social areas will become more fluid. Expect to see multi-purpose spaces that serve both functions. For instance, flexible areas for group workouts that can transform into social spaces for post-class mingling or workshops will become more common.
3. Optimised Circulation for Interaction
Layouts will prioritise member flow and interaction. Gyms will be designed to allow for spontaneous encounters, with open, visible spaces that make it easy to transition from workout areas to social zones. Pathways, sightlines, and communal areas will be strategically placed to foster natural social engagement without disrupting fitness activities.
4. Technology Integration
Smart technology will play a key role in enhancing the social experience. From digital notice boards promoting events and social meet-ups to apps that connect gym-goers for group classes, technology will bridge the gap between fitness and social connection, making it easier to stay engaged with the gym community.
